The goal of the Peachland Mural Festifal, MAKING WAVES, is to create a strong base of evocative public mural art to
1) create added impact and activation in the community, and
2) to create an additional visitor attraction that compliments the other art, community-building, and tourism opportunities in Peachland.
The ultimate goal is to create year-round an open-air public art gallery that will provide Peachland residents and visitors with an ever changing uplifting visual experience; that will delight visitors as the take in the lake view, the beaches, and all the other amenities Peachland provides. The Peachland murals will create a visual experience tailored for all ages and goes hand-in-hand to elevate the current visitor offerings.
Murals created for Making Waves will not be the literal depictions of important moments or people in the community, similar to what one may see in our treasured heritage mural at Princeton and Beach, rather they will be free-from expressions of our themes below, and embody the unique interpretations of the individual artists. Powwow, Murale, in Montreal, or Wynwood Walls in Miami are examples that we will emulate. As we go forward in 2022 and beyond, we will curate art of diverse styles, from abstracts to 3D anamorphic works that will have a positive emotional impact on the viewer, and that will elevate the community.
To ensure that all styles of art are represented, and that there are connections between the works, and Peachland’s “vibe”, we have identified some unifying themes. This will help direct artists and guide the process.
THEMES:
Nature, Wilderness, Water, Plants & Animals native to our region
Orchards, fruit and vineyards
Indigenous Heritage, Beliefs and Traditions (with Indigenous artists)
Neighbours, Community, Connections
Awe, Wonder, Gratitude
Info For artists:
- Artworks should be positive portrayals of subject matter and be uplifting. They may be thought provoking but shouldn’t be divisive or of known controversial or “offensive” subjects.
- The styles can be “edgy”, realistic, abstract, or impressionistic but we are striving to have a good representation of many artistic styles, so for examples 8 abstracts created this year would not be a suitable program. We will invite artists who collectively embody a diversity of styles and subjects.
- Street-art style, and aerosol techniques are welcomed. However “burner art”, graffiti-style lettering works will not be accepted into the festival at this time.
- Peachland Community Connects Society (the coordination organization) will have the final say in determining the suitability of works if the need arises. Following the District of Peachland’s Public Art Policy, the final artwork renderings will also be approved by the District of Peachland Public Art Policy to the extent that the works are in alignment with the community standards described above.
