Why a family of foxes on the firehall wall?
Commercial buildings that donate wall for mural festivals are really donating a blank canvas. With a few broad guidelines to ensure murals are acceptable to the community, artists have a pretty free range to create what they feel the wall needs. But community owned buildings are a little bit different, like the Legion mural of 2022, we want the artwork to embody in some way the buildings’ contributions to the town.
So why paint foxes on the Fire hall? This was a subject suggested by Fire Chief Dennis Craig. He loved the original concept drawings submitted by artist Shelby Willis, and visited her website to see more. There he saw her portrait of a fox.
Ember the fox is the mascot of the Firesmart Program, an initiative that is very important to Chief Craig and to Peachlanders. He wondered if Shelby would be willing to incorporate a fox into the mural.
